Solar Power is the result of converting sunlight into electricity. Sunlight can be converted directly into electricity using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly with Concentrating Solar Power (CSP), which normally focuses the sun's energy to heat water which is then used to provide power.
A Solar Cell, or photovoltaic cell (PV), is a device that converts light into electric current using the photoelectric effect.
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems
In essence, photovoltaic systems use daylight (not necessarily direct sunlight) to convert solar radiation into electricity. The light which shines on the PV cells creates an electric field causing electricity to flow. The greater the intensity of the light, the greater the flow of electricity
Solar Air Heating
For comfortable and healthy living, homes require heating and ventilation. Solar air heating systems use air instead of water to circulate the heat collected by roof mounted solar panels in order to provide space heating and ventilation simultaneously. They are particularly effective in well insulated houses which are built airtight and, when used in combination with a heat recovery ventilation unitncan reduce your heating bills to a minimum. They can also be used to produce hot water through an air-to-water heat exchanger.
Active Solar Heating
Active Solar Heating is one of the primary ways for buildings to use solar energy. This technology uses solar collectors to transform solar energy into heat to provide space and/or water heating. Solar water heating is the most common application of active solar energy. A solar thermal system can also provide space and water heating and is generally referred to as a solar combisystem.
Hot water from the sun in Ireland? One square meter of a domestic roof receives the equivalent of 100 liters of oil in free solar energy per year. A solar water heater produces hot water by transforming sunlight into heat through its solar cells. that heat is then stored in a large water cylinder so that it is available when needed.
But what if the sun is not shining? A Solar Water Heater not only converts direct sunlight but also indirect sunlight into heat, so it works even when the sky is overcast. it is true that there will be less solar heat in winter, but a backup system will boost the water temperature.
Is your house suitable? Most properties are suitable, all you need is the space to put up the solar panels (generally on the roof) and for the storage cylinder (utility room or hot press). You will also need access to the sun orientated between south-east and south-west with no over-shadowing by trees or buildings
Planning Permission for Solar Panels? The installation of solar panels in your home is exempt from planning permission up to 12m2 or 50% of the total roof area.
